"Waddie Welcome and the Beloved Community" is the story of a remarkable man and the people who surrounded him to make their whole community stronger. It is a life lesson in community building from people who became masterful by doing it.

Comment by Tom Kohler on January 22, 2011 at 9:38am 15 Savannah College of Art and Design students, representing 5 countries, met in the library of Bull Street Baptist Church to share in reading Waddie Welcome and the Beloved Community. Professors Julie Varland (Urban Design) and Susan Falls (Anthropology) are using the story to frame a graduate class connecting the 'relationship structure' of a community to the 'physical structure' of a community. We finished our morning with a trip to the Telfair Museum to see Ms. Addie Reeves phone book, which is featured on the cover of Waddie Welcome and the Beloved Community. This felt like 'cultural tourism' - a term I just read about in Jack Pealer's most recent Safeguards Newsletter - jackjr441@earthlink.net. email Jack for a copy.... We are now looking for ways to have Waddie Welcome and the Beloved Community become a yearly cross discipline experience at SCAD.....
Comment by Jack Pearpoint on January 20, 2011 at 10:45pm ON MONDAY, January 24 at 7:00 pm EST - there is an 'experiment' using webex to allow some of us to see and/or chat with one another about what we have learned from Waddie Welcome as we read together - and think about the future.
It should take about 90 minutes. We 'believe' we can have 10 video links plus a much larger number of audio connections. We hope it will work out for any of you who want to join in..
The instructions to join are below.. Hope to 'see/hear' you on Monday at 7:00pm

Comment by Lynda D. Kahn on January 18, 2011 at 5:59pm The spirit if last evening's reading in Toronto reminded me of a Passover Sedar, in many ways ~ the reading aloud, all over the world, of the same, powerful story. A story that brings out the best of who we are and can be with one another. Lynda

Comment by Jack Pearpoint on January 18, 2011 at 1:17am Waddie inspires again.. in Toronto.. Two people who have just moved to Toronto connected with the story - and Addie Reeves 'outsider' art phone book. A reader recalled the parallels and the privilege of being fully present as someone teaches us about death. That was quite a discussion. We recalled parallels to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Canada - which is listening to stories of oppression - and forgiveness - with many 'Waddie" parallels.
It was another lovely Waddie evening.
We had desert - that was also sweet. With thanks to Ray and Michelle for providing their living room.

Terry Martin painted this poster for the reading...
Loved the reading and world cafe conversation at the Broadway Church in Indianapolis today! A lot of people put a lot of effort into creating a wonderful reading. I especially loved having a fair number of smaller children participate - a new experience for me and one I will try to do again. The elementary school- age kids seemed to (and said) really enjoy the reading and participating in the world cafe. (As did the teens and adults by the way!) Their conversation was very deep and insightful. Lots of people thinking about hosting readings or taking some sort of action from their thinking and conversation today. A very satisfying day.
How was your reading???
Comment by Anne Mitchell on December 16, 2010 at 8:14pm Thanks Becki - I think so too. I'm involved in a reading at a church in Indianapolis on MLK Day but I may have to have another reading at a Starbucks as the idea of pulling in some people who just happen to be there is kinda fun to think about! And besides that, imagine what a company like Starbucks might do to get the word out about "Waddie Welcome and the Beloved Community"!
