Meeting March 6, 2012 Minutes

Attendance:  15 People Present

Everyone signed in and an Agenda was given to everyone

Vote:  After much debate, we decided on a name for our group.  We will be called “Our Voice Alternative Living”.  Acronym is OVAL.  Our group also found this acronym fitting as our adults do not exactly fit into a circle or a square.

Introductions:        3 New members attended, and introduced themselves.  Their adults ranged in age from 18 to 25.

Denise Gruber from Cambridge Community Living was a guest at our meeting to discuss the sale of one of the houses within the Organization as well as sharing costs of living within their group homes.

The sale of one of their houses was due to the Ministry asking Community Living to cut back.  The 3 men living in the house were allocated to the “fostering care” model.  Apparently a few others have been added to this model as well.

Denise also shared a generalized costing of running 4 different group homes.

A group member commented on how much the government pays for an individual in an agency setting compared to what they pay us as parents/caregivers.   A reasonably independent person’s annual per diem $42,155.00

Discussions:

Best regards to Paul and JR on their upcoming vacation.  Their son, for the first time will be spending two of the nights on his own before connecting with family/friends.

Nicole suggested a book to read about an autistic man living on his own in the Guelph area.  The book is called “Creating a Home and a good life of my own”.

This family helped found the Autism Society of Ontario as well as several other organizations in the region.  I have left a message with them as I would like to set up an evening where they could come and share their information.

Verlyn mentioned there are some upcoming seminars, I will forward this info on when I receive it from her.  One to note is the Access Waterloo Region Information Night being held on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Highschool.  Because this date conflicts with our OVAL meeting, I have moved the date of our meeting to the Monday, April 2, 2012.  Please note this new date on your calendars.

Homework:  Prepare an assessment of your Adult (attached).  Also, review attached resource manuals that state various different living situations.  We will be discussing these manuals at our next meeting.

Meeting Adjourned:  8:00pm

Next Meeting:  Monday, April 2, 2012, Trillium Building, Cambridge Community Living 6:30-8:00pm

Hi Becki
If you are referring to the site we talked about at our recent gathering, it is accesswaterlooregion.ca

Can anyone remind me what the name of the website is that lists all of the services and supports available to people and families in this area? Thanks.

Hello Becki! Yes, you have heard about a new initiative by Elmira Developmental Support Corporation and its partner Elmira District Community Living. They are undertaking the construction of a 4-plex apartment building that will utilize a variety of support mechanisms to ensure safe independent living for the individual residents. The students that you are referring to, will be on scholarship through Renison University College's Faculty of Social Work. These students will provide a live-in social safety net and will be good neighbours and available in an emergency situation. The individuals choosing to live in this apartment will be surrounded by natural community supports and friends and family that will provide a 'network of support'. This is a very exciting opportuntiy and currently our community is being informed and we are rallying for support. It has been neat to see this type of undertaking take root and develop.
I hope you are well Becki. Thanks for starting this forum and I have a invited a few others and plan to invite more. Thanks. Sherri

Hello KW Group. I am glad that you have all joined in with this group here on the network. If there are others that you know from this area that haven't yet joined, please invite them here so that we can all rally together.

It's been a few months now since we were all together at the summer institute. What's on your mind? What questions are you asking these days? What can you imagine for the groups that work and play here in Kitchener and Waterloo.

Please start up some discussions so that we can all join in and talk some of it through. Falls is a great time to kick off some new ideas and initiatives!

Hi Sherrie! Welcome to the group. Please invite others that you know from the area. I hope that things are going well for you. Did I hear something recently about a new semi-independant apartment program in Elmira? I understand that there is one of the rental units available to a student who will also be available for overnight support. Is this a project by the organization that you work with? If it is, I would love to hear more. Talk to you soon. Becki
