Profile Information

Please share something about yourself, your work, and what draws you to the Inclusion Network online community.
I’m a Dad (and husband), a working voluntary sector leader and an active community volunteer. I currently work as the Executive Director of the Mills Community Support Corporation in Lanark County. The Mills provides social housing as well as services to older adults and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. www.themills.on.ca

Over the past 25 years I’ve:

• been the Executive Director of several organizations which supported individuals with intellectual disabilities. I did a stint in Northern Alberta with the Provincial Government from ’78 through ‘82
• taught in the Developmental Services Worker (DSW) programme at Georgian College in Orillia.
• started Third Sector Consulting in 1990. Third Sector works with voluntary organizations on board development, strategic planning and organizational change projects.
• Been active as a community volunteer through the Anglican church and has been a volunteer soccer and basketball coach for community and school based teams at various levels of play.

I live in Ottawa with my wife Karen, an Anglican minister, the youngest of our three children, a spoiled tabby cat and an aging border collie
What would you like to contribute to this community? What would you like to receive?
I think I have a perspective on how organizations which were established to serve can participate in community development . Connecting with other folks who value inclusion but ( also) struggle with how to help community happen will extend my support network AND ( probably most important) ... shake up my persepective and remind me that there is much that I don't know ( and am not aware of) !
How did you hear about this community?
From an Inclusion Press e-mail promotoing the new Maps and Paths book
What are some of the questions you'd like to explore, or conversations you'd like to have with others in this community?
As an ED in a service providing organization, How do I balance " agency first" thinking with community development ? How can we build the capacity in our organizations to be more than service vendors for the state?
Are there readily accessible supports for learning about inclusion - for direct support staff in community organizations?
How have folks with disabilities become involved in meaningful ways in shaping the direction ( governance) of service proving organizations ?
