I have a 13-year-old daughter who is a 7th grader and has a cognitive disability. We have nudged hard for inclusion at the public school after a successful K-6 stint at a Montessori school.
What would you like to contribute to this community? What would you like to receive?
I can share my joys and struggles regarding the inclusive experience for my daughter. I am also an educator (a Library Media Specialist) at the middle school my daughter attends, and I have lots of teaching opportunities with the students of all abilities in my building.
How did you hear about this community?
I attended a lecture by Barb McKenzie at Bowling Green State University. I googled her name and found this community in the results.
What are some of the questions you'd like to explore, or conversations you'd like to have with others in this community?
I would like to have conversations about those very well-meaning teachers and inclusion specialists who frankly can't understand why I would want to fully include my daughter. How do you help paint the picture for them, without alienating them? I'd also like to talk about how to help my daughter make true friends and keep them. She is a bit reserved among her peers.
