I was privelleged enough to hear Connie and John O'Brien talk about their experiences and suggestions on inclusion. I am thinking about ways to adapt what I do and also, how to talk with others in a way which helps them understand... Wow, so much to do, so much to do

Hi Becki.
I guess the main thing I took away with me after listening to John & Connie is the way in which I ask people in the community to help out on behalf of the person. We normally have 'Circle get togethers' in which we invite people who have said 'Yes' to being there. I thought differently after hearing what Connie calls the "Marie principal" Where you or someone asks members of the community to come along to a get together just to give share their resources and contacts with you. People who have some affiliation with whatever it is that the person wants to pursue in their life. People may find it easier to step forward if you're asking them for their knowledge, telling them that they have something special that you would like them to share. It's so much better than asking " Will you be so and so's friend??" I hope to adopt this approach very soon with a person centered plan for a young man about to leave school. I hope various members of the community will step forward and attend this, even if it is just to pass on useful knowledge or help make something happen which is positive.
